It’s almost common sense that

needs to drink eight glasses of water a day, but is it really good for us to drink so much water? A study has shown that drinking too much water activates a mechanism in the brain to inhibit swallowing. Once this inhibition mechanism is exceeded, we will face the risk of water poisoning, which is often called hyponatremia in medicine. If the sodium content in the blood is too low, it may lead to dizziness.

Dr. Michael Farrell, chief researcher at Monash University in Melbourne, said: “drinking water according to the body’s needs is the right thing to do. Drinking water when you are thirsty is healthier than having a precise drinking schedule. We found that we had to swallow hard after drinking too much water, which means we had to overcome some resistance. In some cases, marathoners die of drinking too much water because they blindly follow the advice that they should drink a lot of water, and eventually drink far more than the body needs

functional magnetic resonance imaging is used to measure the activity of various parts of the brain, which mainly reflects the instantaneous response of human brain before swallowing. The researchers asked participants to take a drinking test after exercise, either when they were very thirsty or when they were asked to drink too much water. The results showed that the amount of brain swallowing mechanism increased three times after drinking too much water. But the scans showed that when participants drank too much water, the prefrontal cortex was more active than usual. The researchers believe that only when the frontal lobe is involved beyond the swallowing mechanism can people achieve drinking behavior. Dr. Farrell said it’s important to note that older people usually don’t get enough water and should watch for the fluids they take.

if water enters the body faster than it can be eliminated, then the electrolytes in the blood will become thinner. This causes water to pass through the blood into cells and organs such as the brain, which affects its function.
